Allied Media Conference

28 02 2008

Is anyone local going to the AMC this year? I need to figure out how to get there (from GR) and back and really can’t afford to do the bus if I could just pay some gas to someone else who is already going, and make a new friend! :)

“The Allied Media Conference cultivates media strategies for a more just and creative world. It is the primary point of intersection in the U.S. for alternative media makers and committed social justice activists. In June, we will come together on the campus of Wayne State University to share tools and tactics for transforming our communities through media-based organizing. Learn more about the AMC.”

Subject/Title: 10th AMC “Our Evolution Beyond Survival: Media Strategies for the Next 10 Years”

Please forward this announcement to all of your networks of networks, your movement of movements…

This is the big one. 10th AMC. Get ready.

The 10th annual Allied Media Conference:
“Our Evolution Beyond Survival: Media Strategies for the Next 10 Years”
June 20-22, 2008 • Detroit, MI
www.alliedmediaconference.org

The 10th annual Allied Media Conference is a milestone for the media movement. Over the last ten years, we’ve broken silence and built movements. We’ve become the media and created our own communications tools. Now we want to use this gathering to project ourselves another ten years into the future.

Amidst the threats we face as individuals and organizations, our survival is cause for celebration. The AMC provides the opportunity for us to celebrate and strategize as a community around common problems: how can we sustain ourselves and our organizations financially without getting caught up in commercialism or the nonprofit industry? How will we ensure there are people to do this work well into the future?

Powerful corporations and unaccountable politicians are advancing their vision of the future. What kind of future are we working towards and what role will our media play in shaping it?

Now rooted in Detroit, we continue to look to sustainability strategies growing from within the current disaster caused by militarism, systematic oppression, failing schools, and the growing planetary emergency. That is where we find people, out of necessity, using media as part of solutions to the problems many more of us will soon face. The AMC is a laboratory and a showcase for these innovations.

Since 1999, the AMC has brought together students, journalists, artists, educators and activists to push the boundaries of participatory media. We are intergenerational with a focus on youth. We all share in the teaching and learning of practical skills for making media and using media to organize for change. This June, we’ll come together to share tactics for living in the world that is and for shaping the world that we want. Please join us.

DON’T WAIT! REGISTER TODAY AT

The Allied Media Conference cultivates media strategies for a more just and creative world. Held every June in Detroit, MI, it is the primary point of intersection in the U.S. for alternative media makers and committed social justice activists from around the country.

We come together to share tools and tactics for transforming our communites through media-based organizing. The panel discussions and workshops of the AMC are hands-on and practical, intergenerational while youth-centered. They showcase the solutions emerging from places where creativity is a matter of survival. Out of the AMC, we evolve new skills and strategies to bring back to our local contexts. We deepen our relationships and expand our networks in ways that support ongoing collaboration throughout the year.

Thing-A-Day

31 01 2008

Thanks CripChick :)

This is the last few hours to register, but I did it. I have registered for the Thing-A-Day which begins tomorrow (February 1). Basically, it’s an agreement to create something every day for the month of February, whether it is cooking something, sewing, knitting, a poem, a piece of art, whatever. Sorta an on-line show-and-tell, LOL.

I’ll come back and let you know my thoughts on this and how it goes, inshaAllah.

UPDATE: Okay, it took me a while to figure out how the heck to access my blog for the project. Now I have it (I think) and you can view it here. My username for the project is WriteousSister. Ah, creativity did not kick in yet, LOL.

Photography Contest Needs Judges

11 01 2008

The following announcement comes from an IAS member. If you are interested in helping out, leave a comment with the requested information and I will pass it on for you. Also, if you are a photographer, stay tuned for contest information or just check out the links. Thanks! (There is no need to include your email address in the body of your comment as I will have it privately when you leave your comment)

As part of the build up to the launch of Ijtema.net 2.0, are thinking
of holding a photography competition. The theme of the contest
is “Hope” to commemorate the Islamic, and Gregorian New Year.

They have made a Flickr acount for Ijtema.net and have created a
group for the competition:

http://www.flickr. com/groups/ ijtema-nynh/

They are a non-profit initiative so at the moment they are looking
for sponsors but more importantly they are also looking for judges
for the competition. I have been requested to be one of the judges
and they would like an additional two judges. As it would really add
more credibility, as well as helping to promote Islamic art, and
artists, and give people an extra incentive to participate in the
competition.

In exchange for helping them, they are willing to promote your work
on the site, during and after the competition. They would also be
grateful if the judges could donate a piece of digital art or print
as prizes. I for one have offered to make them a free print.

They are hoping that the contest will help to find new talent to
promote. So could rely on your support to help them market the
competition, by mentioning it on your group, and any other place
where it would be beneficial.

If you are interested in helping then let me know.

Drop me your email address and website details so I can forward them
to the group, so they can select the judges.

Author Seeks “Revert” Sisters for Book

11 12 2007

Al Salamu Alikum

I am seeking American born female “reverts” to Islam for a book I am researching. The sisters must have come to Islam after 9-11 and not through marriage to a Muslim.  Please help me get as many diverse contacts as possible. Ask the sisters to contact me directly.
