Muslimahs Speak Up! April 2008
18 04 2008Welcome to the Muslimahs Speak Up! blog carnival.
I designed this carnival about a year ago to encourage the writing voices of Muslim women. Some women think they have nothing to say, and some feel that no one is listening. Too often people seek out the voices of those who are not Muslim or who are Muslim in name but express alot of rage towards Islam and their fellow Muslims. Women like Wafa Sultan and Ayaan Hirsi Ali are allowed free reign to talk about what it means to be a Muslim and a Muslim woman and people listen to them, claiming that they are the only voices around. This is absolutely not true, and the lie is thrown out when you see the beautiful and diverse posts I am about to share with you, mashaAllah. Each of these posts is written by a practicing proud Muslimah. We can and do speak for ourselves!
Please enjoy the following essays, reflections, poems, photos and art sent in by Muslim women from all over. Several of these sisters maintain blogs I had never heard of and it was a delight to discover them!
♥ Aeryn at BiPolar Muslimah discusses lessons in Harmony.
♥ Aïda Touré gives us the multi-media piece Marundu’s Thousand Veils.
♥ Baraka at Other/Matters gives us Flashes of Life and at Rickshaw Diaries, Becoming Sahaba. She also shares with us a spectacular photo, The Perfect Rose.
♥ Bint-e-Adam at Tranquil Zone talks about Change and shares Heart Warmer with Man…
♥ Chickadee at A Cheerful Bird shares a poem.
♥ Elizabeth Dann gives Sage Advice on converts’ issues at the Muppie Chronicles.
♥ Ethar El-Katatney tells us about her Neuroses of a Confused Girlie at Musings of a Mademoiselle.
♥ Fatemeh Fakhraie from Muslimah Media Watch talks about the CNN Special on Women in Iraq and takes a broader look at Muslim women in the Media.
♥ Ginny at Ginny’s Thoughts tells us about The Parallels of Being Both Blind & Muslim.
♥ Izzy Mo gives us an excellent essay, Muslim Women Writers Need Not Apply, that speaks directly to why this carnival exists! She also shares with us a touching photo of Fragile Beauty and meditation on impermanence.
♥ Samaha gives us essays on Zina, We Are All of Adam, and Note to My Brothers.
♥ Sofi at Snowy Heights gives us a humorous look at HijabiBabes.
♥ Tiel Ansari from Knocking From Inside shares her poem Blue Sky Power.
♥ Umm Hend has started a wonderful new blog resource for Muslimahs titled Emagine: Muslimahs Awareness. I want to direct sisters to check out this site. From her purpose statement:
“I decided to create a website that could encourage sisters to put their strong feelings and time into things that will benefit the Ummah (in particular Muslim Women and Children) and things that are in need of Muslim advocates. A place that would bring about awareness and give a Muslima voice to the causes that affect the muslim and non muslim communities around the world. A place for Muslim women to get involved, stimulate their minds and become aware, passionate and active about an important cause. And so came Emagine; a place to highlight causes and to get sisters involved in things they feel are important and things that will benefit the Ummah inshaAllah for the sake of Allah. Emagine is run by me, UmmHend but is powered by the involvement, passion and activism of the Muslim Women who give their time and love to Emagines causes. You will find each cause has a different author (or advocate) who researches and advocates for their particular cause or causes. I pray Allah will guide us in this and make it a benefit to the muslim & non-muslim communities and may He guide us all to what is right and upon the straight path Amin.”
♥ Umm Layth at The Muslimah tells us Why I’m Thankful.
♥ Umm Zaid at SunniSisters discusses Arab school mascots and The Expat Divide.
